- COMMENTS ON THE STANDALONE APPLICATION
-
- The user interface has been completely redone:
-
- - The application is AppleScriptable
- - Publishers and Subscribers are supported
- - Balloon help is supported (try pointing the mouse at some text like "print")
- - Online help supported by selecting text and pressing Command-H.
- - The perl debugger runs in a separate window, as does the debug log.
-
- System Requirements
-
- Perl might run on any Mac with at least 4 Megabytes of RAM. If you experience
- anything different, tell us. MacPerl itself will run only under System 7 or later,
- but "MacPerl Runtime" will also run under System 6.
-
- Installing
-
- MacPerl can be anywhere.
- "MacPerl Help" and "MacPerl Runtime" must either be in the same folder as MacPerl
- or in the Preferences Folder (System 7). The "lib" folder may be anywhere, but if
- you rename it or put it in a different folder than MacPerl, you have to give the
- new location in the Preferences… dialog.
-
- Hints
-
- - Running a script "MyScript" has the same effect as "Perl -x myscript"
- would have on a Unix implementation.
- - Dropping a script on MacPerl opens it, unless you hold down the option key,
- in which case the script is run. This may be reversed in the preferences
- dialog.
- - Dropping several files with the option key down is not recommended. The first
- one is assumed to be the script and the rest are assumed to be arguments.
- - Many arguments that would be given on the command line can be specified on the
- #! line.
- - A very useful way to deal with a script is to save it as a Droplet. A droplet
- is a very small application that can be started either by double clicking it
- or by dropping files (whose names will appear in @ARGV) on it.
-
- Known Deficiencies
-
- - Perl doesn't prevent AppleEvents sent to it from timing out.
- - Only an extremely small subset of command line options are currently supported
- (You are allowed, however, to send arbitrary command line options in AppleEvents).
